Windows XP Set-Up
1) Insert XP Disk and press Enter if needed
2) Master Boot Record will be created as Windows is Loading Files
3) Press: Enter to set-up Windows XP
4) Press F8 to accept Microsoft License Agreement
5) Using a calculator observe the total number of Megabytes the disk contains and divide by two to split in half creating two or even three Partitions if desired by pressing “C”, just press Enter if only one Partition is desired
6) Enter number of Megabytes if creating a partition and press Enter
7) Press Enter to create new partition…Formatting the New Partition will proceed / Quick Format can be used but is not recommended
8) Set-Up will copy files to Windows Installation Folders
9) Computer will Reboot and XP Installation starts
10) Select: Next on Language Page
11) Type: your name etc. as required
12) Type Product Key into spaces from label on disk package or on your computers case…click Next
13) Change Computer Name if desired
14) Enter password if desired (leave blank to Boot directly into XP on Startup)…click Next
15) Change Time etc. if necessary
16) Computer will install Network
17) Choose Typical…click Next
18) Click Next on Workgroup Domain page
19) Computer will: copy files / register components / save settings
20) Computer will Reboot
21) Click Yes to adjust Display Resolution
22) Windows XP loads for first time
23) Click next on Welcome Screen
24) Check to turn on auto updates…click Next
25) Select your option for Network Connectivity…(usually first option)…click Next
26) Select: No this computer is always connected to the internet…click Next
27) Select: Obtain IP and DNS automatically…click Next
28) Select: Yes, activate Windows over the internet now…click Next
29) Select: No, not at this time to register with Microsoft…click Next
30) Type: your name and any other users who may want their own User Accounts
31) Click: Finish on Thank You page
32) Click Start Button: All Programs… Windows Update
a) Install Active X Control when asked
b) Click Install Now for updated Windows Update page
c) Click “GO” to update Microsoft Updates
d) Start Now
e) Continue
f) Install Active X Control when displayed
g) Install
h) Check for Updates…always select “Custom” to get all possible Updates
i) Select each item listed with a number next to it to make sure all boxes are checked
j) Select Download and Install Updates ( some may have to be installed individually)
k) Restart Now when displayed and go back to Windows Updates…check for updates until all zeros are displayed on left side of screen for any possible updates
l) Install Service Pack 3 first…when completed and computer has rebooted check Windows Update again until all updates have been installed
33) Internet Explorer 8 Welcome Page comes onscreen:
a) Check dialog box: I do not want to participate right now
b) Click: Install
c) Click: I accept
d) Click: Next
e) After installation of Internet Explorer 8 computer will return to Windows Update
34) Windows Live box comes on screen:
a) Uncheck: Messenger, Toolbar and Family Safety unless desired
b) Click: Install
c) Close these programs for me…comes up…choose not at this time
d) Click: Continue
35) You’re Almost Done page comes up:
a) Uncheck all three boxes
b) Select Continue
c) Click Close on Welcome to Windows Live Page
d) Reboot computer
36) Welcome to Internet Explorer 8 page comes up
a) Turn On Suggested Sites page comes up:
b) Click: No don’t turn on
c) Click: Next
37) Choose your settings page comes up:
a) Select: Use express settings
b) Click: Finish
c) Close Internet Explorer Page…we’ll set up later !!!
38) Check Windows Update install any updates listed
a) Install Active X Control from Toolbar by clicking: Run Add-on / Run
b) Again always select: Custom
c) Install all listed Windows Updates by clicking on all items listed on left with a number next to it making sure all boxes are checked
d) Select: Next
e) Reboot computer when Installing Updates has finished this round of updates
f) Check Windows Updates after computer restarts install all updates
g) Keep checking Windows Updates until all updates are installed
39) Right Click Start Button:
a) Click on Properties
b) Start Menu Tab: Click Customize
c) General Tab: choose Small Icons, Programs set to “0”
d) Advanced Tab: check Favorites box, My Network Places, Network Connections needs to be changed to: Link to Network Connections Folder, System Administrative Tools should be selected to: Display on the All Programs menu and the Start menu and Recent documents box needs to be unchecked
e) Click: OK when finished
f) Click: Apply
40) Taskbar Tab:
a) Select: Auto hide the taskbar and Show Quick Launch
b) Uncheck the box for Hide inactive icons
c) Click: apply
d) Click: OK
Right Click on the Taskbar:
a) Uncheck Lock the Taskbar
Right Click on Taskbar:
a) Toolbars: Uncheck Language Bar and Windows search Toolbar
b) Right click again to select Links by left clicking the word Links
c) Place Cursor on right sided Dotted Lines on left bottom of screen
d) Cursor will change to double sided arrow
e) Hold down left mouse button and drag these dotted lines as far right as possible…(cursor changes to black double lines with double arrows)
f) Right Click Taskbar: Click to Lock the Taskbar
41) Click: Start Button: All Programs / right click items you want on Start Menu by clicking: Pin to start Menu
42) You can drag items into place on the Start Menu and also into the Taskbar by holding down left mouse button and drag item into place
43) By Right Clicking Taskbar: uncheck Lock the Taskbar and drag Taskbar to side or top of screen by holding down left mouse button
44) Right Click Taskbar again to check: Lock the Taskbar
45) Click: Start Button
a) Run
b) Type: msconfig
c) Click: OK
d) Startup Tab: Uncheck all items except: msseces (Microsoft Security Essentials) or if you are using another Anti-Virus program make sure its selected to start with Windows
e) Click: Apply
f) Click: Close
g) Select Restart
h) Select box: Don’t show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows start:
i) Click: OK
46) Click: Start Button / Control Panel
47) Click: Add or Remove Programs:
a) Click on left side of page: Add / Remove Windows Components
b) Select every items except uncheck box for Windows Messenger
c) Insert Operating System (XP) disk into drive click Exit when dialog box shows
d) Click: Next to add Components
e) Click: Finish
f) Close Add / Remove dialog box to return to Control Panel
g) Remove XP disk from computer
48) Click Display:
a) Themes Tab / no changes in most cases
b) Desktop Tab / select Wallpaper background from Background options
c) Screen Saver Tab / None (unless desired to have changing backgrounds) during idle computer time
d) Power: Turn Off Monitor / Never…click Apply…close Power Options Properties box
e) Appearance Tab: Effects…select Clear Type from Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts…click OK
f) Advanced: (below Effects options) click down arrow on Item and select each listing choosing the “B” box when possible to make fonts Bold for easier reading…click OK / Apply when finished
g) Settings Tab: drag slider by holding down left mouse button to the right choosing your best possible screen resolution as per your monitors capability and your personal liking…click Apply
49) Folder Options Icon in Control Panel:
a) General Tab: check box for Single-click to open an item (point to select)
b) View Tab:
a) Hidden files and folders: select Show hidden files and folders
b) Uncheck: Hide extensions for known file types
c) Check: Show Control Panel in My Computer
d) Click: OK
50) Internet Options Tab:
a) General Tab: Address should read www.google.com
b) Temporary Internet Files: settings should be 50 (click number listed to highlight and change)…click OK
c) History: change to “0” so hard drive doesn’t store visited web pages
d) Security Tab: Click Default Level / click Apply
e) Privacy Tab: click Advanced check box to Override automatic cookie handling and check Block under Third party cookies…click OK
f) Content Tab: Personal Information…select Auto Complete uncheck any checked boxes select: OK
g) Advanced Tab: Scroll down and check box…Do not save encrypted pages to disk…click Apply / OK
51) Mouse Icon in Control Panel:
a) Buttons Tab: Double Click Speed slider move to far right…check box for Turn on Click Lock…click Apply
b) Pointers Tab: choose the look of your pointer…click Apply ( select Bronze or Black so that pointer isn’t White on a White background)…click Apply
c) Pointer Options Tab:
a) Motion: move slider to the right by holding down left mouse button
b) Check boxes: Snap To and Show location of pointer when I press down the CTRL (Control) key…click Apply
c) Wheel Tab: using down arrow change to 1…click Apply / OK
52) Now would be a good time to visit the webpage for your computers manufacturer checking its support options looking for your computers drivers.
a) Install all listed unless message comes up stating you already have a newer version for this driver…(return to Control Panel when finished)
b) Highly recommended to save this webpage in Favorites
c) (Secured PC Computer Systems Tip): In Documents create a Folder titled My Downloads by Right Clicking
d) New Folder
e) Name your folder according to the name of your download
f) Click: Save
g) Click: Run
h) ALWAYS SAVE YOUR DOWNLOADS INTO A FOLDER WHICH YOU HAVE CREATED HERE
53) Printers and Faxes Icon in Control Panel:
a) Install Printer by selecting: add a new printer and follow the steps using the printer disk only if necessary to install printer drivers
54) Sounds and Audio Devices:
a) Volume Tab: Advanced…adjust Speaker Configuration if necessary
b) Click: OK
c) Sounds Tab: Click each listing below adjust to your liking and remember to name and Save Scheme
55) Click System:
a) Hardware Tab
b) Device Manager
c) Make sure there aren’t any yellow exclamation points showing an uninstalled driver for that particular device…if so
d) Right Click device with yellow exclamation point and click on Update Driver…if this fails for some reason you need to check your computer manufactures web page again for that particular driver and install as directed
56) User Accounts Tab:
a) Here you can change the way you log on or off
b) Click: Your name pictured below
c) Here are several self-explained options
d) Most common changes are in: Change my picture (or)
e) Create a password in order to lock someone else out of your computer so they cannot use it without your permission
f) If you do this: Write down your password somewhere safe in case you forget it yourself down the road
57) Windows Firewall Icon:
a) General Tab: On should be selected
b) Exceptions Tab: Don’t make any changes here unless you are sure what you are doing, because each box checked is a HOLE in your Firewall
c) Advanced Tab: No changes should be necessary here under normal circumstances
58) Close down control panel
59) Click: Start…Run type msconfig
a) Startup Tab: uncheck all except for msseces (Microsoft Security Essentials) your Anti-Virus software
b) Click: Apply
c) Click: Close
d) Click: Restart
e) Check box: Don’t show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows start:
60) Click: Start Button
a) Favorites
b) Right Click on Favorites Bar
c) Left Click: Rename
d) Type: Links
e) Move the cursor back up to Links you just created
f) Right Click and Left Click on Delete for each item listed here
g) In the future when you visit a webpage you want to save, add the page to your Favorites and by using the down arrow click on Links and your page will be saved here…Notice the Links option by the clock is where you will find your saved webpage, or from Favorites / Links from the Start Button
61) Open Internet Explorer 8:
a) Right click just above the Google Tab:
b) Uncheck: Menu Bar (pressing the Alt key will bring it back up when needed)
c) Uncheck: Favorites Bar
d) Right Click just above Google Tab again:
e) Click: Customize / Add or Remove Commands
f) Drag the Customize Toolbar box down by holding down the Left Click button on mouse
g) You can add or remove and also move up and down items from your Command Bar here which is located just above the Google Homepage
h) Set as desired
i) Click: Close
62) NOW YOU HAVE FINISHED SETTING UP WINDOWS XP:
63) From here you can install your 3rd Party Software…(Your Own
Personal programs you want to use)
64) MOST IMPORTANT POINT HERE IS TO CHECK SETTINGS IN EACH INDIVIDUAL PROGRAM YOU INSTALL MAKING SURE AUTO-UPDATE IS TURNED OFF IN EVERY PROGRAM EXCEPT WINDOWS AND YOUR ANTI-VIRUS PROGRAM
65) Also make sure the program you’ve just installed Doesn’t Start with Windows each time the computer starts…you can verify in msconfig if needed
